According to thy name thou wast a servant of God the Word./ Found worthy of the Light that passes understanding/ thou didst receive the illumination of prophecy./ For thou didst discern the immaterial Glory/ and become an instrument sounded by God,/ O Prophet Obadiah,/ and foretell things to come.

We celebrate the memory/ of Your prophet Obadiah, O Lord;/ through him we beseech You:// "Save our souls."

Ὥσπερ θεράπων φερωνύμως τοῦ Λόγου, τοῦ ὑπὲρ ἔννοιαν φωτὸς ἠξιώθης, καὶ προφητείας ἔλλαμψιν ἐδέξω σοφὲ· δόξαν γὰρ τὴν ἄϋλον, καθαρῶς ἐποπτεύων, ὄργανον θεόπνευστον, Ἀβδιοὺ ἀνεδείχθης, προμελῳδοῦν ἐν κόσμῳ μυστικῶς, τῶν ἐσομένων, Προφῆτα τὴν ἔκβασιν.

Armed with youthful manliness,/ thou didst endure martyrdom in old age and glorify Christ./ Thou didst offer Him thy right hand as a whole burnt offering/ and thy holy soul as a blameless sacrifice./ Intercede that all may be granted forgiveness, O Great Martyr Barlaam.

Your holy martyr Barlaam, O Lord, / Through his sufferings has received an incorruptible crown from You, our God. / For having Your strength, he laid low his adversaries, / And shattered the powerless boldness of demons. / Through his intercessions, save our souls!

In his suffering, O Lord,/ Thy martyr Barlaam received an imperishable crown from Thee our God;/ for, possessed of Thy might,/ he set at nought the tormentors and crushed the feeble audacity of the demons.// By his supplications save Thou our souls.

Νεανικὴν ἐνδεδυμένος ἀνδρείαν, μαρτυρικὴν ἐν πολιᾷ καρτερίαν, σὺ ἐνεδείξω ἔνδοξε δοξάσας τὸν Χριστὸν· τούτῳ δὲ προσήγαγες, δεξιᾷ κεκαυμένη, ὡς θυσίαν ἄμωμον, τὴν ἁγίαν ψυχήν σου. Μεγαλομάρτυς πρέσβευε ἀεί, πᾶσι δοθῆναι, Βαρλαὰμ συγχώρησιν.

Having acquired the grace of the Holy Spirit, O divinely wise and holy hierarch Philaret, , you preached truth and righteousness to the people with enlightened understanding; with a contrite heart you showed peace and mercy to the suffering; and as a teacher and tireless guardian of the Faith, with the staff of uprightness you preserved the Russian flock. Therefore, as you have boldness before Christ our God, pray that He preserve the Church and grant salvation to the people and our souls.

The great Obadiah, acquiring a mind luminous with divine splendor,/ speaks through the Holy Spirit, proclaiming things to come./ Today we honor him with faithful minds,// celebrating his holy memory which enlightens the hearts of men.

Thou didst offer thy life as acceptable first-fruits to the Triune God, Obadiah;/ and having received the beauty of inspiration/ thou didst reveal things to come and so didst cry: Alleluia.

Ὡς ἀπαρχὴν εὐπρόσδεκτον, προσαγαγὼν τὸν βίον σου, τῷ ἐν Τριάδι Θεῷ παναοίδιμε, θεαρχικῆς ἐλλάμψεως, ἀπηνέγκω τὸ κάλλος, καὶ μελλόντων ἐκφάντωρ θεοειδέστατος, Ἀβδιοὺ ἀνεδείχθης, κραυγάζων· Ἀλληλούϊα.

Though aged in body thou didst vanquish the evil one/ by thy mighty contest, O Barlaam./ Thou didst endure the rack like one without a body,/ and manfully bear the burning of thy hand./ Wherefore God the Word has crowned thee with a crown of glory.

Though weak with old age you vanquished the evil one, / in your mighty contest, O Barlaam. / You endured the rack like one without a body, / and steadfastly endured the burning of your hand. / Therefore, God the Word has crowned you with a crown of glory.

Thou wast shown to be most amazing in the fortitude whereby thou didst endure immolation,/ and didst offer thyself in sacrifice unto Christ as incense of sweet savor.// Having received a crown of honor, O Barlaam, do thou ever pray for us, O athlete.

Γηραιῷ ἐν σώματι, τὸν παλαιὸν ἐν κακίᾳ, κρατεροῖς παλαίσμασι, καταβαλὼν Ἀθλοφόρε, ἤνεγκας, καθάπερ ἄσαρκος τὰς στρεβλώσεις, ἔφερες, τὴν τῆς χειρός σου καῦσιν ἀνδρείως· διὰ τοῦτό σε ὁ Λόγος, στεφάνῳ δόξης, Βαρλαὰμ ἔστεψε.

As a true imitator of the venerable Sergius; you loved virtue from childhood, O divinely blessed Philaret. As a righteous pastor and blameless confessor, you were subject to mockery and abuse by the ungodly after your holy repose, but God has glorified you with signs and miracles, and shown you to be the helper of our Church.
