O Apostle Matthew, Thou didst hear the Voice of the Word/ and receive the light of faith./ Thou didst abandon the office of publican/ and proclaim Christ God's Self-emptying./ Ask that those who praise thee may receive forgiveness and great mercy.

O Apostle Matthew, who did hear the voice of the Word, and receive the light of faith, you did abandon the office of publican and did proclaim Christ God's self-emptying. Entreat that those who honor you may be granted forgiveness and great mercy.

O holy apostle and evangelist Matthew,/ entreat the merciful God,// that He grant unto our souls remission of transgressions.

Llanafan remembers thee, O Hierarch Afan,/ thou teacher of piety, pastor, guide and inspirer of men's hearts./ Wherefore, O holy one, entreat Christ our God/ that He will grant great mercy to our souls.

When thou didst cast away the publican's balance/ thou didst take the yoke of righteousness/ and become a merchant rich in wisdom./ Thou didst preach the Word of truth/ and rouse the slothful by describing the Last Judgment.

Casting aside the bonds of the custom house for the yoke of justice, / you were revealed as an excellent merchant, rich in wisdom from on high. / You proclaimed the word of truth / and roused the souls of the slothful / by writing of the hour of Judgment.

Casting off the yoke of thy publican's office,/ thou didst shoulder the yoke of righteousness/ and wast shown to be a most excellent merchant,/ bringing in the wisdom from on high as riches./ Wherefore, thou didst preach the Word of truth/ and hast uplifted the souls of the despondent// describing the hour of judgment.

When you did cast away the publican's balance, and did take the yoke of righteousness, and become a merchant rich in wisdom, you did preach the true Word and did rouse the slothful by describing the Last Judgment.

When the Master called you to forsake all things, O blessed Matthew, you did not delay in obeying Him; and you recorded the tidings of salvation for publicans and sinners, and all that trust in Him.
